Project-based learning

Project-based learning is a central part of the way we do things at UTC Reading.
Our students work with employers on industry-specific projects. This helps them build relevant skills, including teamwork and communication, and gain experience which prepares them for he workplace.
Recent projects have included:
Reading train station redesign – set by Peter Brett Associates
UTC Reading students worked with mentors from Peter Brett Associates to redesign the old part of Reading’s train station. The project encompassed all parts of the curriculum, from English and geography to science and IT. This was fully integrated into day-to-day lessons and learning experiences. During the project, teachers aligned their classes with the project’s objectives and tasks, and Peter Brett Associates hosted off-site project days.
App building challenge – set by Microsoft
Microsoft challenged UTC students in each of the school’s companies (equivalent to a house system) to design a mobile app.
Students worked in teams to create their app concepts before presenting a shortlist of prototypes to a panel of judges from Microsoft. After delivering professional presentations and demonstrating their apps, teams faced tough questioning from the panel to make sure that their business idea was sound.
Thames Water challenge

Year 10 and 12 students got to experience what it would be like to plan and deliver water to a town, in a challenge set by associate industry partner Thames Water.

Teams had to plan and budget how they would install water and sewage systems before being given the parts that had been budgeted for to build their network.
To keep the teams on their toes, Thames Water threw in a complaint or issue which had to be dealt with. This included a burst water pipe and contaminated land.
Points were awarded for correct calculations, submitting documents on time, matching their network to the planned route, responses to interventions and demonstrating team work, communication and problem solving.
